Abstract
Five species of bot flies infect horses world-wide. Four of these are found in the United States, but only 2, Gasterophilus intestinalis and Gasterophilus nasalis , are common. Of these, the common horse bot G. intestinalis is more widely distributed and infests 99% of the horses in Kentucky. Although deaths from bot infections are rare, ovipositing by female flies annoys horses and larvae produce lesions in the mouth and stomach.
