Abstract
Effect of temperature on the excitation processes of the H α and H β lines of atomic hydrogen in the afterglow of water vapour has been studied in a dynamical flow system in the temperature range 27–340°C. It has been found that the intensity of these lines decreases with increasing temperature. It is inferred that the mechanism causing the excitation of these emissions is quite involved. However, the applicability of the present results to the terrestrial exosphere has been demonstrated.
