Abstract

Oxidation behavior of magnetron sputtered Ti1-x-yAlxTayN coatings (with y varied from 0.1 to 0.35) on titanium substrates was studied upon isothermal exposure in air at 850 and 950 °C in comparison with a Ti0.45Al0.55N coating. It was found that the Ti1-x-yAlxTayN coatings demonstrate substantially improved protective properties at a temperature of 850 °C while this effect is only slightly pronounced at 950 °C. The protective properties of the Ti1-x-yAlxTayN coatings at 950 °C were found to deteriorate with increasing the Ta content so that only the Ti0.41Al0.49Ta0.10N composition provided reasonably effective protection of the underlying titanium substrate.
