Abstract
Metallic mating surfaces in machine joints after a good source of energy dissipation, resulting in damped dynamic structural response as, for example, in machine tools. Designing an optimum structural joint giving rise to desired damping is possible if all the surface topography factors are understood. Various mechanisms and theories related to damping of metallic joints are reviewed. An expression which leads to evaluation of energy dissipation in the form of hysteresis loop area is given in which the influence of material and surface topography parameters is shown directly.
