Abstract

An ellipsometric study was made on mechanically polished mild steel specimens in 1.0M HCl at rest potential. The results were found to be influenced by (a) the time between washing the specimens and immersion in the acid, (b) the diamond compounds used in polishing and (c) the solvents used in washing the specimens. It was also found that the corrosion rates were reduced if the specimens were immersed in the acid cathodically polarized before being left at rest potential.
