Abstract

In the sulfidization-amine flotation of zinc oxide, the inevitable presence of slime deteriorates the efficiency of zinc recovery, especially in the cleaner flotation stage. However, the relevant deteriorating mechanism has yet to be clearly explained. Results of micro-flotation indicated that the surface oxidization of smithsonite samples could aggravate the adverse effects of quartz slime coating. Moreover, quartz slimes could easily cover the surface of oxidized smithsonite samples from the slime coating results. Zeta potential measurements and DLVO theory calculations confirmed the stronger interaction between quartz slime and the surface of the smithsonite samples with high oxidization. In addition, XPS analysis further illustrated that the oxidation of sulfide products to sulfate species was an important reason for the deterioration of the slime coating.
