Abstract

The temperature response of ZrB2–20vol% SiC composites with different surface microstructures of ZrB2/SiC (ZS1), silica-rich glass (ZS2) and porous zirconia (ZS3) was investigated using an oxy-acetylene torch. The three ZrB2–SiC composites showed a large difference in their surface temperatures during ablation, resulting from the different surface component and microstructure. ZS1 and ZS2 exhibited low temperature and good ablation resistance owing to the protection from glass on surface. However, ZS3 displayed high surface temperature (>2300°C) and underwent remarkable mass loss under the same ablation condition that could be attributed to the combination of oxidation, radiation and heat conduction associated with the porous zirconia exposing on surface.
