Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of varieties and row spacing on growth, yield and quality of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) at Main Sugarcane Research Station, Junagadh Agricultural University, Kodinar during 2009–10, 2010–11 and 2011–12. The experiment was laid out in split plot design comprising four row spacing (60, 90, 120 and 30: 150 cm row spacing) in main plots and three varieties (CoC 671, CoN 91132 and CoN 05071) in sub plots. Experimental results indicated that significantly highest cane yield was obtained in 90 cm row spacing (106.91 t/ha) over 60 cm and 120 cm row spacing but remained at par with paired row 30: 150 cm (103.49 t/ha). Quality parameters were not affected due to different row spacing. Variety CoN 05071 produced significantly higher cane yield (104.32 t/ha). This variety also recorded significantly higher brix, sucrose and CCS % percent over other varieties, although purity and extraction percent could not reach to the level of significance. The interaction effect of paired row planting 30: 150 cm in combination with variety CoN 05071 produced significantly highest cane yield (114.15 t/ha) over all other treatment combinations except 90 cm row spacing in combination with CoC 671. The highest net return (Rs.11517) with cost: benefit ratio 2.55 was recorded with 90 cm row spacing followed by paired row 30: 150 cm. Among varieties, CoN 05071 gave the highest net return (Rs.107348) with 2.39 CBR.
