Abstract

Epitaxial films of PbS, PbSe and PbTe deposited on mica cleavage surfaces have been studied using an electron microscope. In addition to the (111) orientation expected from the symmetry of the substrate surface, the (001) orientation of the film was also found. The formation of the (001) oriented nuclei is influenced by the surface structure, such as steps and potassium ion distribution in the cleavage surface. Furthermore, the (001) orientation of the film deposited on phlogopite mica lies along three directions and on muscovite mica lies along two directions; this difference is interpreted with reference to the occurence of polymorphism in mica.
