Abstract

An experimental study was conducted to study the effect of Strouhal number on the flow field of a turbulent pulsed jet. The results presented in this study correspond to measurements of thrust and flow field over a range of Strouhal numbers from 0.034 to 0.42. The measurements show that the thrust of the turbulent free pulsed jet was found to be weakly dependent on the primary jet Strouhal number. It is about 13% higher at a Strouhal number of 0.106 as compared to an equivalent steady jet. The global mean velocity field showed that with increasing primary jet Strouhal number, the centerline velocity decays faster and the potential core length decreases. Mass flow rate measurements showed that the variation of the normalized mass flow rate with the primary jet Strouhal number is not monotonic. Furthermore, the variation of vortex ring circulation with Strouhal number was also observed to be non-monotonic.
