Abstract

On the basis of Fredlund & Xing's equation, this paper presents a new water-retention equation that takes into account the effect of initial dry density on the water-retention behaviour. Besides, a new strength equation is proposed to predict the shear strength of unsaturated soils under different stress states based on the proposed water-retention equation. The comparisons between measured and predicted shear strengths of unsaturated soils are employed to validate the proposed strength equation.
