Abstract

INTRODUCTIONFISH meal is currently used as a source of unknown growth factor(s) and as a protein supplement in practical poultry feeds. At the 5–10% levels commonly used, it unquestionably serves as a valuable source of the essential amino acids. Supplemental usage, however, does not satisfactorily reveal the quality of fish meal protein per se inasmuch as the quality is masked by the other proteinaceous ingredients of the ration. For this reason, many investigators (Grau and Williams, 1955; Ousterhout, et al., 1959; Hinners and Scott, 1960; and Ousterhout and Snyder, 1962) have turned to various quality bioassays of fish meal as the sole source of protein.Bioassays require 2 or 3 weeks for the evaluation of a fish meal, which is too long a time for practical purposes. A quick chemical test would therefore be desirable. Several different chemical tests have been proposed, but none has as yet been…
