Abstract

In the current investigation, combustion and emission characteristics of yttria stabilised zirconia (YSZ) coated diesel engine under the combined effect of steam injection and ferric chloride (FeCl3) as fuel additive were studied. The results indicated that, addition of 0.2 g L−1 FeCl3 with diesel in YSZ coated engine along with steam injection reduced the emissions such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and smoke opacity by 33, 42, 31 and 59%, respectively, as compared to standard diesel mode in uncoated engine. The brake thermal efficiency increased by 2.5% and brake specific fuel consumption reduced by 5.5% indicating the effectiveness of the combined effect of steam injection in the coated engine.
