Abstract

Summary Twenty-eight university students (14 normal weight, 14 overweight) were “stared” at by a statue of a female human head in eating and noneating conditions for a maximum of IS minutes. An equal number of normal and overweight Ss served as controls. The results showed that being stared at by a statue produced flight behavior. Both normal and overweight Ss departed sooner in the eating than the studying condition. Overweight Ss departed significantly sooner than did normal Ss in the eating condition, but not significantly sooner in the noneating condition.
