Abstract

A new form of barium stearate observed after cooling the technical grade (containing also barium palmitate) after heating above the transition temperature is characterized by i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray study. Transition between two forms stable at room temperature is accomplished in the presence of 5–10% mol water. The presence of water during the early stages of thermal degradation of the mixtures of PVC with barium stearate can be demonstrated by the conversion between the two forms.
