Abstract

Squid protein and squid protein extracts have been shown to improve both growth rate and food conversion in Penaeus japonicus. In the present study the effects of squid protein and two extracts on haemolymph levels of glucose and free amino acids were measured at different times after feeding, in P. japonicus fed a semi-purified diet. Glucose and free amino acid levels increased faster in the group the squid extract-supplemented diet. These results suggest an effect of squid extract on the absorption of nutrients (intestinal transport or endocytosis) but an effect on the hydrolysis of protein and starch by digestive enzymes is also possible.
