Abstract

The effect of soybean mosaic virus (SMV) on root volume and dry weight of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seedlings was determined in two environments (greenhouse and controlled environment chamber). Root volume of susceptible cvs. ‘Bragg’ and ‘Tracy’ was reduced up to 61% 30 days after 10‐day‐old seedlings were inoculated. The reduction in dry weight of roots and top portion of Bragg and Tracy seedlings ranged from 38 to 59%. Root volume of D73‐7725 (resistant) was reduced 18% by SMV when the plants were grown in a controlled environment chamber but was not reduced in the greenhouse environment.
