Abstract

Comparative Fe59 iron utilization tests were carried out in nine normal and three iron-deficient subjects. The utilization of iron in each subject was determined after receiving a ferrous sulfate solution alone, and after receiving a ferrous sulfate solution, of the same concentration, to which sorbitol had been added. Higher iron absorption from the sorbitol-containing solution was observed in ten of twelve patients, values being 1.35 to 2.37 times their own controls. The results strongly suggest that sorbitol improves iron absorption in man.
