Abstract

Summary Experiments have been done to study the effects of some auxins (IAA; 2,4-D; NAA and NOA) and cytokinins (BAP, kinetin and 2iP) on vegetative growth and onset of reproductive phase in female clone of Riccia frostii Aust . Auxins promoted vegetative growth at lower levels, but inhibited it at higher levels. They adversely affected morphology of plants, caused abundant production of rhizoids and coiling of thallus lobes at their higher levels. Among auxins 2,4-D promoted maximum growth. Cytokinins also enhanced growth of thalli especially at lower levels and BAP proved most effective. As in higher plants, both auxins and cytokinins favoured formation of female reproductive structures. Among auxins NAA elicited maximum response, whereas 2iP was most effective among cytokinins.
