Abstract

The influence exerted by the thickness of backfill soil placed over the top of a pipe on basic parameters governing the failure of an underground gas main in the form of a turn in the wall of the pipe is demonstrated. It is established that the potential for an extended failure of a gas main is appreciably lowered even when the backfill thickness is 1 m. By varying the surcharging capacity of the backfill, it is possible to attain the parameters required to eliminate extended failures of gas mains.
