Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect of soft contact lenses on healing of corneal epithelial mechanical trauma. Methods Two hundred fourty cases (240 eyes) of corneal epithelial mechanical trauma were randomly and equally divided into experimental group and control group. The experimental group was treated with extended wearing hydrophilic soft contact lens (SCL) for 1 week, the control group with sterile eye pad dressing. Then all the patients were treated conventionally with 0.5% levofloxacin eye drops and recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) eye drops for 2 weeks, four times a day.During the follow-up period of 2 weeks, local symptoms and signs were scored according to patients' complaints and slit lamp microscope observation before treatment and the 3rd day,the 7th day and the 14th day after treatment respectively. The time of corneal epithelial healing of two groups were recorded. The result were statistically analysed, and the efficacy of two treatments were evaluated. Results There was no significant difference in scores of local symptoms and signs between experimental and control group before treatment (t =1.2856,P =0.2012).The experimental group got a more significant decline of scores than control group on the 3rd day after treatment(t =3.4317,P =0.0146) ;In comparison with the control group, the effective rate of the experimental group was significantly higher at the 3 rd day after treatment (x2 =6.026,P =0.0152) ; The corneal epithelial healing time of the experimental group was (3.01 ± 1.36) d it was shorter than that of the control group, which was (4.08 ± 1.59)d.The difference between two groups was statistically significant(t=4.5416,P =0.0105).Conclusion During the healing of the corneal epithelial mechanical trauma,SCL with local medication can promote wound healing, shorten the course of treatment, reduce symptoms and decrease complications.
