Abstract

Sodium salicylate and 2:4-dinitrophenol have been administered to rats, and the effect of these compounds on the uptake of D-galactose has been examined in the subsequently eviscerated nephrectomised animals. Sodium salicylate and 2:4-dinitrophenol appear to increase the penetration of the intracellular water by this sugar. This observation is discussed in relation to the effect of these compounds on oxidative phosphorylation.
