Abstract

Objective To detect the effect of sodium butyrate on proliferation of cervical cancer HeLa cell line and VEGF mRNA expression and investigate the role of sodium butyrate in the proliferation of the cervical cancer HeLa cell line. Methods Cervical cancer HeLa cell line was cultured in vitro. After treatment with various concentrations of sodium butyrate for 72 h, MTT was used to detect the proliferative and inhibitive status. And VEGF mRNA-expression was detected by RT-PCR. Results After treatment with various concentrations of sodium butyrate, the cell proliferation and VEGF mRNA expression was obviously depressed, compared with the control group, the effect in a time-dose-dependent manner within a certain range. Conclusions Sodium butyrate can inhibit cell proliferation and VEGF gene expression level in cervical cancer HeLa cell line. Inhibition of the VEGF gene expression level may be one of the reasons that sodium butyrate inhibits the proliferation of the cervical cancer HeLa cell line. Key words: Sodium butyrate; Cervical cancer; Cell proliferation; Vascular endothelial growth factor
