Abstract

Paco 2- curves of three subjects were obtained with constant low Pao 2 in the awake state and in induced sleep. Hypoxic levels were 37 and 40 mm Hg Pao 2. The response curves obtained in the awake condition showed the so-called dogleg or hockey-stick shape. This characteristic shape did not change in sleep. However, the steep slope, S, with high PAco 2 decreased to one-half to one-fourth and the curve was shifted to the right. The response curves of the two subjects in low Paco 2, range, s, were verified to have a slight slope (p< 0.01). The ratio of s to (S-s) was about 0.1 in the conscious state and 0.3 during sleep. Despite the constant hypoxic Pao 2, stimulation in the conscious experiment, slow activity of EEG in low Paco, was restored to normal with increasing Paco 2,.
