Abstract
The periodic approximation to a typical electrocardiograph signal is found to be inaccurate as the residuals from the actual ECG and the periodic approximation failed consistently to satisfy the hypothesis of being a realization from a white noise process. The authors, therefore, considered the model which is the simultaneously amplitude- and frequency-modulated version of the periodic model and obtained the average spectrum of the more comprehensive model. The average spectrum is displayed in a manner in which the “spike” part corresponding to the periodic part of the ECG (QRS complex) and the part corresponding to the underlying nonperiodic part of the ECG are identified and displayed.
