Abstract

Crystalline phase of pure TiO2 and ZnO coated TiO2 core@shell hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized by two methods. First one is the preparation of core TiO2 nanoparticles by simple coprecipitation method and the other is the growth of ZnO shell layers on core TiO2 nanoparticles by refluxing methods. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the formation of anatase TiO2 and wurtzite structure of ZnO on the surface of TiO2 core. The morphology and size of the nanocrystallites were determined by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope studies. The presence of Ti and Zn was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. UV–Vis measurement shows absorption peaks in the UV region for both TiO2 and TiO2@ZnO core–shell nanostructures. Significant increase in the intensity of photoluminescence peak was observed for ZnO-coated TiO2 than bare TiO2 which infers the recombination of the photo generated charge.
