Abstract

In this paper, the frame is designed to the ultimate limit state with two design procedures, either rigidplastic or elastic design methods. It is shown that serviceability deflections, as recommended by the Steel Construction Institute, govern the design of a 30 m span portal frame, with material cost increasing by 27% compared to an ultimate limit state design alone.2 OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM
