Abstract

The influence of salinity on the larval development of the inshore water crab, Philyra corallicollawas studied in 8 different salinities. None of the first zoea moulted to next instar in 5, 10, and 15% salinities. At 20 and 25%0 salinities, 26% and 32% larvae moulted to megalopa in 130.6 and 161.0 hours, respectively, but did not metamorphose to first crab. However, first crabs stages in 30 and 35%0 were obtained at 253.7 and 275.8 hours with 40% and 12% survival, respectively. Again in 40%) salinity, 14% megalopa appeared in 178.6 hours, which did not moult to the first crab stage. Maximum survival with minimum development period was observed in the salinities of 30%0 and 35%., suggesting the optimum salinities for larval development in the inshore water crab, P. corallicola.
