Abstract

Summary An experiment was conducted in an attempt to replicate prior research on the effect of available helping resources on diagnostic attributions of the source (situational vs. dispositional) of clients' needs. Both counselor trainees (n = 20) and undergraduate students (n = 20) served as Ss. Consistent with previous findings, it was predicted that available resources would influence attributions, and that this effect would be mediated by the impact of resources on Ss' perceptions of the helping role. Marginal support was found for the hypothesis that resources would influence role perceptions, but only for the counselor trainees. No support was found for the other hypotheses.
