Abstract

ABSTRACT Non-linear equations of continuity and momentum representing oscillation of water in surge tank due to instantaneous closure of turbine valve are solved by different numerical methods. Effect of using variable friction factor in place of constant value of turbulent friction factor is investigated. To assess the numerical solutions, a laboratory model of surge tank with constant upstream reservoir head is fabricated. The laboratory observations of rise and fall of pressure head in the surge tank is made against time. Comparison of numerical solutions with the observed laboratory data clearly indicates the effectiveness of using variable friction factor in computing unsteady equations of surge tank.
