Abstract

The compressive residual stress (CRS) introduced by ultrasonic surface rolling process has been proved to be the dominating factor to improve the fretting fatigue (FF) life of materials. In present work, the effects of CRS on the crack initiation and crack propagation were investigated through interrupted FF tests and finite element methods. The main function of CRS was to increase the crack propagation life but had less contribution in prolonging the initiation life. In addition, the FF crack initiation for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy was revealed to have the characteristics of multi-source and easy nucleation.
