Abstract

The apical ectodermal ridge of the embryonic chick limb has been demonstrated to be essential for normal limb outgrowth and development. However, the rate of cell division in the mesenchyme close to the ridge has been found to be similar to the rate of cell division in other regions of the limb. In the present experiments, the rate of cell division in the mesenchyme close to the ridge and in three other regions of the limb in normal limbs has been compared with the rate of cell division in the same four regions after removal of the ridge. It has been found that removal of the apical ectodermal ridge has no effect on the rate of cell division in any region of the limb.
