Abstract

REFERRING to the experimental results obtained by Kalashnikov1,2 and Kapitsa3 on reduction of magnetic susceptibility of rocks by their uniaxial compression, Stacey4 has suggested that a possible local accumulation of mechanical stress within the Earth's crust in a pre-earthquake stage may result in an anomalous geomagnetic change of observable magnitude, which can serve as a pre-earthquake phenomenon for forecasting earthquakes.
