Abstract

The desiccation survival and rate of desiccation of three Hirschmanniella species were studied. A slow desiccation of technique (Simons, 1973) was used at five different relative humidities to determine survival while the rate of desiccation was investigated by Ellenby's (1975) fast desiccation technique. H. spinicaudata tolerated desiccation most and H. oryzae least and adults survived better than second stage juveniles. Large globules formed in nematodes exposed to low relative humidities. H. spinicaudata had the slowest rate of desiccation and H. oryzae the fastest.
