Abstract

ABSTRACT Al composites have got major attention in the research environment with its durability in industrial applications. This work deals with the addition of nano-silica into the Al6061 matrix and an investigative experimentation was carried out for the preparation of metal matrix composite. Two methods have been adopted, namely single step and two-step stir casting for investigating the better method for achieving the desirable properties. Different wt% samples were fabricated for maximum dispersion and good mechanical properties at an optimum filler loading. Samples were tested for microstructural characterisation of the composite using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XRD. Tensile, compression and Brinnel’s Hardness Number (BHN) reveals the strength of both the composites. The density and porosity of composite was tested on the sample using Archimedes’ principle. The effect of reinforcement and fabrication methods was analysed for maximum dispersion. Each silica particle acts as a nucleation agent and load-bearing element. Various factors were analysed in the experimentation process for optimisation.
