Abstract
The effect of reaction conditions on the desulfurization of oil-sand coke residues was studied. The variables investigated were temperature, reaction time, heat-transfer resistance and mode of caustic soda addition. The results show that oil-sand coke de sulfurization increases with temperature, reaction time and heat-transfer rate. In an oxidative environment, coke combustion during molten-caustic leaching (MCL) commences at temperatures above 500 °C. The mode of caustic addition has no effect on coke desulfurization.
