Abstract
The human head is modelled as a fluid-filled spherical sandwich shell. The fluid is inviscid, irrotational, and compressible. The axisymmetric loading function is a timewise Heaviside function with a variable duration. The effect of the pulse duration on skull fracture and brain injury is investigated numerically. Short loading pulses are found to be less damaging. Human tolerance curves are obtained using hypothetical skull fracture and brain injury criteria. The curves follow the some trend as that of the Wayne State Curve.
