Abstract

The paper presents the results of studying the effect of 3 keV solar wind protons on the optical properties of a thermal control spacecraft-intended coating based on zinc oxide powder. Upon irradiation, cation and anion vacancies and interstitial atoms form an absorption band with a maximum at 420 nm. In the near IR region, absorption is determined by free electrons. Additionally, it has been experimentally confirmed that the ratio of energy loss caused by elastic collisions to the one caused by ionization processes decreases with increasing proton energy from 3 keV to 100 keV.
