Abstract

RESEARCH on the nutritional value of cottonseed meal when used in poultry feed formulas, as well as the gossypol theory of the toxic effects of cottonseed meal have been adequately summarized by Heywang and Bird (1955), Altschul (1954) and Couch, Chang and Lyman (1955). The last group of workers reported that lysine when added to diets containing free gossypol increased the growth rate of chicks fed such diets. However, the level of tolerance to free gossypol was not changed. It seemed from these data that increasing the level of protein in the diet might prove effective in overcoming free gossypol toxicity. With this objective in mind, two experiments were designed and carried out to test the tolerance of chicks to different levels of free gossypol at three different protein levels in a purified type of diet.Cabell and Earle (1956) have reported a similar study using rats as experimental animals …
