Effect of protein and sodium hypochlorite on endodontic instruments

Abstract

When carbon steel endodontic instruments were immersed in 1 sodium hypochlorite for ten minutes, photographs did not show, on. a one-to-one comparative basis, corrosion of the instruments. With 5% NaOCl, corrosion was present. When purified bovine collagen was added to both 1 % and 5 % NaOCl, corrosion was present. The greatest corrosion was seen when the combination of 5 % NaOCI and purified bovine collagen was used. When stainless steel endodontic instruments were immersed in 1 and 5 % NaOCl, with or without purified bovine collagen present in the solution, photographs did not show, on a one-to-one comparative basis, corrosion of the instruments.
