Abstract

Objective To explore the effect of propofol on the expressions of cytokines in ventila- tion-induced lung injury. Methods Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups with 10 in each. Group C received 10 ml ·kg-1·h-1 of 5% glucose infusion while was ventilated with a tidal volume of 10mlAg· Group V was infused with glucose at the same dose with a tidal volume of 25 ml/kg. Group P received 10 ml· kg-1·h-1 of 0.04% propofol infusion and was ventilated with a tidal volume of 25 ml/kg. All the rats were sacrified 4 hours after infusion. The wet/dry lung weight ratio and levels of TNF- α and IL-1β in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were measured. Results The wet/dry lung weight ratio and levels of TNF- a and IL- 1 β ere significantly increased in group V as compared with those in group C (P< 0. 05). Propofol significantly reduced the wet/dry lung weight ratio and levels of TNF-α and IL-1 β in group P as compared with group V. Conclusions Propofol inhibits the increase of the wet/dry lung weight ratio and levels of TNF- α. and IL-1 β in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid after high tidal volume ventilation. Key words: Propofol; Ventilation; Tumor necrosis factor-α ; Interleukin-1
