Abstract

Aim: This study is designed to examine the effect of Progressive Muscle Relaxation combined with Deep Breathing Technique immediately after Aerobic Exercises on reducing Essential Hypertension. Study design: Experimental study Method: 40 patients of essential hypertension were recruited for treatment of 2 days. Treatment for all these patients; on Day 1 received Aerobic Exercises which included warm up period, aerobic exercise period and cool down period along with Rest (sitting position with hand activities on pack board) and on Day 2 received Aerobic Exercises which included warm up period, aerobic exercise period and cool down period along with Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Deep Breathing Technique with detailed evaluation including Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressure were taken before aerobic exercises, immediately after aerobic exercises , three minutes after aerobic exercises on both the days&after rest on Day 1 and after Progressive Muscle Relaxation&Deep Breathing Technique on Day 2. Results: There was significant reduction in Systolic and Diastolic BP within the two days after resting (day1) and after Progressive Muscle Relaxation&Deep Breathing Technique (day2). Significant higher reduction in systolic BP was found after Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Deep Breathing Technique (day2) came to normal value as compared to that of resting (day1). Conclusion: There was significant reduction in blood pressure to normal value after giving progressive muscle relaxation and deep breathing technique which is not possible for hypertensive subjects only with medication after exertion.
