Abstract
Transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel is a kind of ultra high strength steel (UHSS) that has been widely used in vehicle body manufacturing due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, high carbon content of TRIP steel will cause the brittle fracture. Additional post-heat schedule is an effective way to improve toughness of spot weld joint. But the long extraneous weld cycles will be a tragedy in view of productivity. This study proposes an alternative strategy to improve toughness by using profile force. Profile force was successfully applied by making use of a stand-alone servo electrode force controller, and TRIP 1180 steel sheet samples were welded with constant force and profile force. The experimental results indicated that toughness of spot weld joints is remarkably increased in the case of profile force.
