Abstract

The effect of pressure on the elastic constants of Ag and Au has been measured from −196 to +25°C and up to 2500 bar using the torsional-bar-resonance technique for the shear constants c 44 and 1 2 (c 11−c 12) , and the ultrasonic pulse-echo technique for the elastic constant c 11. The pressure derivatives of all the elastic constants are found to decrease with decreasing temperature. The observed temperature shifts of the pressure derivatives for Ag and Au are found to be much larger than the corresponding theoretical values. The experimental results are used to test the validity of several empirical equations of state and to calculate the temperature dependence of the elastic Grüneisen parameter of noble metals in the framework of the quasi-harmonic approximation-anisotropic continuum model.
