Abstract

The expanding use of compacted clay for lining waste disposal pits, solid waste landfills, and water retention ponds has provided engineers with new experience on the performance of clay liners. Loading of a clay liner by a waste may not always be doubled. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of pressure increment ratio (?P/P0 ≤ 1.0) on permeability of clay liners. An experimental study on the permeability characteristics of undisturbed and remolded samples of Eymir clay is reported. One dimensional consolidation tests were carried out using different pressure increment ratios of one and less in a temperature controlled room. The square root of time curve fitting method was used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation cv and coefficient of permeability kT values were calculated from cv values. Variation of kT with pressure and the effect of pressure increment ratio on kt were determined. Coefficient of permeability kT values have been found to be independent of the pressure increment ratio and coefficient of permeability decreases as pressure increases.
