Abstract

Bi85Sb15-xNbx(x = 0, 1, 2) alloys were synthesized by high-temperature pressure sintering and Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) methods. Before sintering process, nano-particle Bi85Sb15-xNbx powder was prepared by mechanical alloying. Bulk samples were fabricated with nano-particle powder by high-pressure sintering under a pressure of 5 GPa for 30 min at 523K, and by SPS under a pressure of 50 MPa for 30 min at 523K, respectively. The transport properties involving electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and calculated power factor were investigated in the temperature range of 80–300 K. The results showed that Seebeck coefficient of the Bi85Sb13Nb2 prepared by high pressing reached to -161.83 μV/K at 105K, which is 69% higher than that of the Bi85Sb15, and its power factor was 4.45 × 10-3W/(mK2) at 220 K. For the samples prepared by SPS, the maximum Seebeck coefficient value of -138.93 μV/K was obtained at 105K, while the power factor value of 4.2 × 10-3W/(mK2) was obtained at 220K.
