Abstract

Summary No significant difference could be found between the average specific gravity (index of the degree of calcification) of dentin from pregnant women and from other individuals. The average specific gravity for dentin of the pregnant group was 2.12 while that of the nonpregnant controls was 2.08. It was concluded that gestation did not cause a withdrawal of calcium salts from the dentin and, therefore, the caries already present in this group of pregnant women was not associated with a metabolic demineralization of that tissue.
