Abstract
The effect of powdery mildew infection of sugar beets on the amount of electron carriers in infected leaves has been compared with control leaves. No decrease in the C-550 content was detected, suggesting that the Photosystem II reaction center is unaffected by infection. The Photosystem I reaction center, estimated on the basis of P700 photo-oxidation and bound iron-sulfur protein photoreduction, is also unaffected by mildew infection. In contrast to these carriers, infectivity affects the amount of chloroplast cytochromes in diseased leaves. Cytochrome f, cytochrome b 559, H. P., cytochrome b 6 and cytochrome b 559 L.P. are decreased by approximately one-third in infected plants. These results indicate that obligate parasite infection may specifically alter the content of electron carriers involved in dark electrontransfer processes.
