Abstract

End-to-side portacaval anastomosis (PCA) was performed in adult male Sprague—Dawley rats. Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), picrotoxin (PCT), semicarbazide (SCZ), strychnine (STR) and amine-oxyacetic acid (AOAA) were administered parenterally. Time of onset of convulsive phase, duration of the convulsions and mortality were recorded. Time of onset of convulsions was significantly increased in rats with SCZ and was reduced with STR and PCT. Duration of convulsions was significantly increased by PTZ and SCZ and reduced by STR. AOAA blocked the SCZ-induced convulsions. Mortality was increased with PCT. It is suggested that PCA modifies the time of onset and duration of drug-induced convulsions.
