Abstract

This paper presents an analytical method for determining the three-dimensional stress fields in plates with a through-the-thickness crack, especially under elastic-plastic conditions. Using the generalised plane strain theory in conjunction with the deformation theories of plasticity, exact solutions are obtained for the effects of plate thickness on the crack-tip plastic zone size and a plastic constraint factor, which is shown to correlate well with published finite element solutions.
